Shadow Dextrous Hand grabs attention at Tokyo robot event Another
standout at this week's International Robot Exhibition 2009 in Tokyo is
the Shadow Dextrous Hand along with the CyberGlove. The robotic hand can
be operated remotely by a human wearing the sensor glove to perform
actions as delicate as cradling an egg, changing a light bulb or writing
with a pen. Developed by the UK-based Shadow Robot Company, the hand is
capable of up to 24 distinct movements that mirror that of a real human
hand. http://www.cyberglovesystems.com/

Scientists have discovered the largest virus in the world in the ocean
off the coast of Chile. The Megavirus Chilensis measures around 10 to 20
times the length of the average virus – or about 0.7 micrometers
(thousandths of a millimeter) in diameter. It likely infects single-cell
marine amoebas, which float around in the ocean, and was found off Las
Cruces, in central Chile during a biology trawl. Continue reading...

At first glance, hydrogen fuel cells might seem like the perfect
alternative to fossil fuels. They can generate electricity using only
hydrogen and oxygen and are pollution free. An automobile running on
hydrogen fuel cells would not only be more efficient than one powered by
an internal combustion engine, its only emission would be water.
Unfortunately, while hydrogen is the most abundant element in the
universe, most of it is bound up in molecules such as water. That means
pure unbo... Continue reading...

Albert Einstein told us that the line between matter and energy is a
fuzzy one. Energy can be produced by either splitting or combining
atoms—processes known as fission and fusion respectively. Nuclear
fission releases harmful radiation and produces large amounts of
radioactive material, which can remain active for thousands of years and
can destroy entire ecosystems if leaked. There is also concern
that nuclear material could be used in weapons. Currently, most nuclear
power plants... Continue reading...

Oceans cover 70 percent of the Earth, and water is a natural solar energy collector.
OTEC, or ocean thermal energy conversion, aims to exploit this fact and
use the temperature differences between surface water heated by the sun
and water in the ocean's chilly depths to generate electricity. OTEC plants generally fall into three categories:
Closed Cycle: A liquid with a low boiling point like ammonia is boiled
using warm seawater. The resulting steam is used to operate an
electric... Continue reading...

This handy, pocket-size mobile transmission detector can sense the
presence of an activated mobile phone from a distance of one-and-a- half
metres. So it can be used to prevent use of mobile phones in
examination halls, confidential rooms, etc. It is also useful for
detecting the use of mobile phone for spying and unauthorised video
transmission. The circuit can detect both the incoming and outgoing
calls, SMS and video transmission even if the mobile phone is kept in
the silent mode. Continue reading...

These are not artificial roses! The Rainbow Rose is now available in
the UK for the first time and although you may think that these weird
and wonderful blooms are painted or artificial they are one hundred
percent natural. Almost. Well, ninety nine percent. Well, OK, they have
been messed with, but not, as you may expect, on a genetic level. It
seems that there is a little science
involved in this rather expensive rose - a single one will set you back
over thiry US dollars. They are... Continue reading...

David Forbes, an electrical engineer from Tuscon, Arizona, has developed a way to mix fashion and technology by creating a shirt packed with LEDs that transforms into a walking tv. Forbes first bulit a coat in 2009 after receiving a surplus of LED displays, which he now calls "the world's worst televsion," as it was a 50 lb all-red screen. He then expanded on his first developments to create a lighter version with better quality. The coat has since been trimmed down to two comfortable shirts, w... Continue reading...

— Astronomers using NASA's Kepler mission have discovered two new
circumbinary planet systems -- planets that orbit two stars, like
Tatooine in the movie Star Wars. Their find, which brings the number of
known circumbinary planets to three, shows that planets with two suns
must be common, with many millions existing in our Galaxy. The two new planets, named
Kepler-34b and Kepler-35b, are both gaseous Saturn-size planets.
Kepler-34b orbits its two Sun-like stars every 289 days, and... Continue reading...
